The USC Aiken Men and Women’s tennis teams kicked of their seasons with victories last week in their season openers.
The Men’s team defeated Wingate University by a score of 6-3. The match started out with the Pacers taking victories in 4 of the singles matches. Gregory Andrade, Juan Xavier Ponce, Nicolas Markeiwicz and Juan Guglielmeti were the winners for the Pacers in the singles matches. Guglielmeti teamed up with Filipe Garcia to win a doubles match, Markeiwicz and Ben Klass followed suit with a 8-5 victory to wrap up the win for the Pacers.
The 17th ranked means team would go on to lose to fourth ranked Valdosta State Later in the week by a score of 7-2.
The Lady Pacers beat Wingate University 5-4 thanks to their strong showing in the singles matchups. The Lady Pacers also won four of the six singles matches. Mathilde Grenet, Stephanie Humphrey, Maria Angel and Brittany Telford were in the win column for USC Aiken. Wingate was given a little hope when they picked up victories in two tightly contested doubles matches. The Pacers eventually closed out the match as Grenet and Telford won their doubles match 8-1.
Both the men and women of the USC Aiken tennis teams will next be in action on February 11th as they travel to Columbia to take on Benedict College.
