The Internet is an avenue of limitless potential capable of the highest praises from total strangers to the common trolls and cyber bullies. In the same vein, YouTube has always been a place of miracles, launching virtually unknown people –persons who would most likely never be discovered otherwise- into stardom practically overnight. Rebecca Black's "Friday" is an example of this phenomenon.
She has received a lot of hatred and scorn from the public, leaving some people to say that her music video was the ‘worst song ever produced.' There have been several parody videos, remixes, and straight-up hate videos to compliment this general attitude. In addition, Black has amassed over a millions dislikes versus only one hundred thousand likes on the video.
However, I would like to relay this idea to you: Rebecca Black has become more famous than most of us would ever want to be-- a voice for the masses... no matter how monotone or auto-tuned. With over sixty million views and counting, her popularity has grown. Whether that is good or bad press becomes the same thing for the average internet user. As a culture interested in the newest anything, we are eager to show the latest meme on the Internet and hers was another of our fickle design. Should we really be condemning Black for her ‘lackluster performance' or praising her for rising above the common person? Her dream of stardom was accomplished. What have you done for your dreams lately?
