Students all across the U.S. have one time or another questioned themselves about living on or off campus. Both options have its advantages and disadvantages so it is crucial for you to weigh your choices before making a final decision. Most colleges believe that it is more important for students to live on-campus. Research has demonstrated the benefits of on-campus living. I will address three. The first, safety, the college takes measures to protect students in their dorm rooms. Secondly, students are less likely to fail a course or be on academic probation. Finally, they have access to diverse experiences and people.
On the other hand, many students after living on-campus a semester believe that living off campus is better and less of a headache. This is said to be true because it gives the students a sense of responsibility, independence and privacy. With all this said, should USCA only have a yearly housing contract? Of course some will say yes and others no. Therefore, I still believe an option for a semester contract and a year contract should be available. A semester contract, I believe, will be more beneficial to the students than a yearly contract. Many students find residence halls and dorms very small. Others find their GPA dropping low, because campus life is very social and some even lose their sense of privacy. Some students may love the on-campus experience and for others living on campus, it is one of the worst experiences ever.
I think that if a student has lived on the campus for a semester, has no housing violations, and wants to move off campus because it is just too overwhelming for them; they should be given the opportunity to do so. Yes, I believe living on campus should be an experience, but I also believe that students can find out within a semester if living on campus is for them or not. Should you live on or off campus? This can be the hardest decision to make because each one will lead to a different college experience.
