Registration should be a priority

Registration for Fall classes began Monday, April 4, and those with the most credit hours get first pick. Tuesday, the second highest class members are allowed to register. Then we get to Wednesday, and the classes have been picked through... or have they?

I was one of the many who was not qualified to register until Wednesday, April 6, even though I was told by Disabilities Counselor Cathie Justen that I would be given priority registration privileges. And yet, when I remembered to register on Tuesday, the VIP page told me I was ineligible; so I had an extra day's wait. I was dreading the arrival of 1:10p.m.; however, I was in for a surprise when the appointed time arrived.

Every class my adviser and I had spoken about regarding my major requirements was still open, with many seats left available in each; even the classes with less than 15 seats. Why would a student who has newly changed majors still have all his classes available on the third day? It could be the result of many reasons, not least among them the size of the graduating class and the fact that entering freshmen do not yet have permission to register. It could be simpler than that.

As many students as USCA has, it would be reasonable to assume that there is a huge number that has yet to register because these students haven't quite made up their minds as to a Fall schedule. Not knowing where to go with one's future is a scary thing, though sometimes having a definite plan can be just as scary. This is why it is vital for all students to make appointments with their advisers in advance of the registration starting date.

With help from a faculty member, each student can make a plan for the upcoming semester. The faculty of USCA is willing to assist in any way they can if the student just asks for help. So, ask for it!  Register soon, because classes are filling up.
