For those who believe the military's "Don't ask, Don't tell" policy is a homophobic, extremely conservative rule barring homosexuals from entering the military, you are wrong. The nation is in uproar over the policy that many claim take basic constitutional freedoms, specifically that of the freedom of speech, away from the homosexual community and haven't taken the time to even understand the meaning of it. It has taken one radical voice to change what has been in place for many years; one radical voice to try to repeal something that should NOT be repealed.
"Don't ask, Don't tell" is just what it says it is; no one is going to ask a soldier if they are gay, while at the same time that soldier is not allowed to admit they are gay. In context it never denies a homosexual from entering the service, but only prohibits speaking of, or committing, "homosexual acts" such as the marriage of someone of the same sex or "making a pass" to someone of the same sex in uniform. Under the policy a soldier is actually allowed to attend homosexual rights rallies and go to homosexual bars, just not in uniform. Where in that does it scream oppression? Our military has operated perfectly fine with such a policy in place and changing it will only cause upset and corrupt the unit cohesion and honor the service is built on. The bonds of trust among many members of the military will be easily broken with the repeal. This policy protects the members of the homosexual community that might be serving from real oppression and harrasment.
For those complaining that their freedom of speech is being violated, service members in the past were never given a chance to speak out when the military changed itself forever with the integration of African Americans and women into the service and now someone who probably has NO affiliation with the military wants to change its policies on account of "loss of freedom of speech?" Why should one of the most respected professions give way to such pressures and not consider the opinions of those who serve? It's time for the skittish Americans to stand up for the traditional values our country was once based on.
