On June 11, 2009, MTV aired the controversial documentary 16 & Pregnant; which follows the lives of pregnant teenagers on their way to parenthood. The success from the first season lead to a second season, which is airing now, and MTV is currently casting for the third season. Teen pregnancy is anything but uncommon, and there are several shows on TV whose theme revolves around teenage pregnancy: 16 & Pregnant, Teen Mom, Secret Life of the American Teenager, etc. Are these shows educational for today's youth? Does it make teenagers think, "Maybe I shouldn't have sex" or "Maybe I'll use a condom"; if so then great. But what if it does the opposite? What if they think, "All I have to do is get pregnant and I could be on MTV and the world will know my name?" Young society's aspiration for fame seems to be apparent, and shows like 16 & Pregnant and Teen Mom are easy gateways into stardom for these young girls. Hey MTV, what about a show named 16 & _________; where 16 year olds can share their stories such as I'm 16 &: a genius, a writer, a fashion designer, a movie star, a music artist, a chef, a future athlete, a dancer, a model, a business owner, in college, in jail, homeless, getting married, or something along those lines. I think that would make for a better, broader show than 16 & Pregnant.
