Common Sense Is Dying

Common sense is sound, practical judgment in a given situation; this means paying attention to the obvious. Common sense can be gained through experience or sometimes just taking the time to slow down and think logically. We have all had moments where common sense has failed us, whether it’s when you over thought a problem that has a simple solution or you failed to reach one at all. No one on this planet is perfect, but it seems that the idea of common sense is slowly becoming less common. Everyday, it seems like there is a new situation that could have been avoided with the use of a little common sense. Have you ever read the back of a microwavable dinner and saw the caution warning you that the food would be hot? This may seem like a kind gesture, but it is actually to protect the company who makes the food from lawsuits because some people don’t realize that a microwave could heat things up.

I feel that part of the reason common sense is dying is that in our society, it is a lot easier to place blame elsewhere rather than taking responsibility for our own actions. We are bombarded in society by trivial lawsuits that exploit companies for not pointing out the obvious. Society has taught us that we are all victims and we should sue to “protect” others. You see this becoming more and more popular with the spread of these fail blogs. Not to say that these blogs aren’t entertaining but I use them to give an example in which the absence of common sense is becoming more prevalent.
