Students participated in the 2011 Relay for Life event to benefit cancer survivors on Friday April 15.
Entitled "A Cure in Every City," the theme of this year's Relay for Life was for sororities, fraternities, other campus organizations and participating groups from the ACOM 491 Leadership Communication course to choose a city around the country and make the team's booth a reflection of those chosen areas.
The participating groups raised over $3,000 through donations and sales. All proceeds benefited the American Cancer Society.
The Student Government Association built their booth's theme around Chicago sold pizza by the slice to represent the "Chicago-style" pies. One group, Mardicause, from the communications course, themed their booth around the Mardi Gras festival in New Orleans and sold grilled hamburgers and hot dogs along with "Nola" juice.
Members of the Aiken community along with faculty, staff and students at USCA gathered in support by making donations to their favorite themed booths or by walking a lap around the Quad area. This year's event included the survivor walk, a raffle hour, a live band and several organizations and class groups that sold food and accepted donations.
Later in the evening, the Relay for Life committee awarded Coney Island for the most luminaries sold, Alpha Kappa Alpha for the most money raised ($825.93), Omega Phi Alpha for the best campsite, Mardicause for the best theme incorporation, Lambda Chi Alpha for the most spirit and Maggee Byrd was named the most outstanding executive committee member.
