Growing up in Randolph, Mass., Associate Professor Doctor Richard Maltz never imagined that he would provide inspiration for fellow musicians and students through his work, but that is exactly what he does.

Maltz originally went to Boston Northeastern University to major in engineering and had no intentions of pursuing a career in music, but this choice eventually changed and he earned his Bachelor and Master of Music education degrees from the University of North Texas. He later went on to continue his music education and received his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of South Carolina.

Maltz is not only known for his work in South Carolina. His compositions have been played in a variety of places. Just a couple of years ago he commissioned a piece for the Prospect Symphony Orchestra from Illinois that they performed in London. Maltz takes joy from other people taking an interest in his works.

"Anytime a group performs my music it is a highlight," said Maltz.

Nov. 12 in the Etherredge Center at 7:30 p.m. there will be a Faculty Artist Recital that will feature a premiere performance of Deliverance, a piece composed by Maltz. This recital will include other pieces composed by Maltz including Centennial of Life and Suite for Piano. Maltz is glad that he can share his love of music with those around him, especially his students.

" I love interacting and sharing musical experiences with the students. I love helping students discover, and I love sharing my passion of music with them. Being able to bring them along is very fulfilling."
