"Halo 3: ODST" drops on Sep. 22. According to VGChartz, this hit for the Xbox 360 and PC had already claimed over 1.2 million pre-orders prior to release.
The Halo franchise has dominated online communities since "Halo 2" went live in 2004. And with the release of "Halo 3" in 2007, Microsoft set an all-time record for the most revenue earned in a single day by any entertainment property, raking in over $170 million in sales in the U.S. alone on its first day. To put that record in perspective, Halo grossed more money on its first day than movie premiers like "Harry Potter" and "Spider Man 3."
Major Nelson, PR for Xbox Live, reports that over 8.1 million copies of Halo 3 have been sold after its release. And Halo 3 boasts over 1 billion games played online. When broken down, that is over two trillion seconds, or upwards of 64,000 years of total playtime logged.
Halo is a powerhouse in the video-gaming industry, and "Halo 3: ODST" promises the same knockout numbers as its predecessors. ODST is a stand-alone expansion to "Halo 3."
The game offers a new campaign, three new maps to be played with the existing multi player universe of "Halo 3," and the all-new "firefight mode." The new mode pins players up against endless waves of foes, calling groups of four together to test their mettle, teamwork, and endurance on the survival scoreboard. And in addition to ODST, the game comes with an extra disc containing all of the maps from "Halo 3," practically making it two games for the price of one.
